China Allows AI to Run As Judges, Applying Laws And Solving Real Cases.

I’ve wondered about lawyers and judges could be replaced by Artificial Intelligence, but I could never have thought a real country as big and powerful as China would set the starting of a futuristic trend for a futuristic justice system by allowing AI to judge real people problems and cases. Check out the video right after the break to see the Chinese AI judge in action.

Can AI Replace Lawyers?

I’m just thinking out loud here in regarding to lawyers and laws in general.  As I’m watching Suits TV show, I can’t help but wonder will lawyers one day become obsoleted as AI (artificial intelligence) becomes smarter as we speak?  Current crude AI can already beat the best chess masters, go masters, and whatnot, and so it’s just logical for me to think that one day AI may as well replace lawyers, paralegals, and so on.  Basically, if AI can make connections between a legal matter, the AI won’t have a problem of calling up its computer power to recall facts in milliseconds.  The killer is how ethical, judgmental, and smart enough an AI can be in making the right judgment when defending or prosecuting a case.  I’m no lawyer and I have no real knowledge in this field at all, and so my thinking could be very naive in this regard.  Anyhow, it’s just my thinking out loud as I get curious since the Suits TV show is quite good.

Afterthought:  Should AI be absolutely unbiased in legal matters?  Perhaps, AI could be sympathetic, but would this be a disaster for ethical reasons in regarding to legal matters?  Perhaps, could AI be program to be sympathetic to a client only in regarding to legal matters?  Could an AI machine be the subject of blame when it could not perform better than the opposite side’s AI in regarding to legal matters?  After all, AI could be programmed to be smarter or even smarter than current smartest AI, and so I guess it would come down to which side is the luckiest as such a side is being defended by the smartest AI in the room.  Then again, would we consider the same idea when it comes down to human lawyers?  The smartest human lawyer in the room could bend truth and set a criminal free from a prosecution, right?

Or perhaps, the AI is so smart and quick, it could be the judge, the jury, the lawyers, the paralegals, and whatnot in one shot.
