Samsung Gear VR Review (let’s get real with virtual reality)

Lately, I’d been infected by the virtual reality hype from reading gaming news, and so I decided to go out and grab Samsung Gear VR headset.  I’m using Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which is being compatible and supported by Samsung Gear VR, and so I didn’t have to hesitate of grabbing a Samsung Gear VR headset.  The price point for Samsung Gear VR headset is only $99, and so it didn’t cost me an arm or a leg or anything like that.  It was a quick drive to Best Buy, and I got myself one.  It was weird too, because when I grabbed mine at Best Buy, it was the last one in store.  They told me so!

Anyway, I thought with all the hypes from the reviews on virtual reality headset, Samsung Gear VR would have blown my mind.  To tell the truth though, my mind wasn’t blown, but I appreciate the technology.  If you have never watched 3D movies before, Gear VR headset or any other virtual reality headset on this date (roughly around early 2015 till now which is Dec. 29th of 2015) would probably have blown your mind.  Fortunately for me, my mind is safe since I’d seen plenty of 3D movies in theaters before.  Although 3D movies are not exactly 360 degree environment, these movies do give you a perspective as if you’re closer to the entertainment medium while you’re at it.  3D view that is!  As if you’re there.  Virtual Reality headsets such as Samsung Gear VR go one step beyond 3D movie technology, because these things provide you the perspective of 360 degree immersive environment.  This means the movies and games you watch and play would put you in the center of the mix.

Samsung Gear VR got one thing going is that it’s virtual reality on the go, because it’s wireless and mobile.  Similar virtual reality headsets won’t have the problem of entertaining you on the go for sure.  Nonetheless, with technology such as Samsung Gear VR, the picture quality is still not high definition enough, thus the range of grainy quality to near HD won’t provide you the immersion that you might have thought a virtual reality environment would provide you.  For me, this is a big disappointment.  I guess, 4K media and various high quality entertainment pictures have had spoiled me in term of allowing me to adjust my brain and eyes to a plethora of Ultra HD picture media, and so Samsung Gear VR could only provide me a 360 degree immersion dimension.  Now, if Samsung Gear VR and other similar VR headsets could provide me the Ultra HD resolution while in 360 degree immersion, this would’ve blown my mind.

Oculus Rift may come out very soon in early 2016, and I’ve heard that with this you maybe able to get much better picture quality in virtual reality.  The resolution would be gorgeous since it does require you to hook up to a moderately powerful computer.  I guess, I may have to wait till Oculus Rift comes out before I can confirm how my mind would go insane for this sort of technology.

With several drawbacks, I still think Samsung Gear VR is super fun.  I got to play a game known as Vanguard with Samsung Gear VR, and it’s somewhat amusing.  My head would do the Chris Tucker’s head dance as if I’m right next to Jacky Chan and telling him don’t touch a black man’s radio.  Now, if in the future you could ride with Jacky and Chris in Rush Hour X using Samsung Gear VR, this would be awesome!

After playing Vanguard, I went on and tested out the social environment in virtual reality, and it’s too somewhat amusing.  I saw myself sitting in the theater environment of sort, but watching someone else who is playing his or her media or a game or whatever.  I could have a little chit chat to the next person if I didn’t mute myself.  I think you may have to also use a bluetooth headphone before you could begin a chitchat like that.  I didn’t even have that, and so I didn’t even try to bother with it.

I got to watch couple 3D 360 degree immersion videos, and by this time I was like I’m loving it.  Nonetheless, the resolution of these videos pulled me out of the virtual reality immersion quite quickly.

Oh, by the way, you can also watch Netflix with Gear VR headset, and this is quite fun to do so.  To tell the truth though, I prefer watching Netflix on a 4K monitor and 4K TV, because the resolution would be way better.  Nonetheless, watching Netflix in Gear VR headset is quite fun, because you put yourself in a different environment.  Basically, you would see yourself sitting on someone else’s couch watching Netflix on a big screen TV.  You would see a remote control, but won’t be able to grab it.  I guess, the next big thing would be virtual reality plus holographic senses, allowing you to feel the senses of touch and smell, digitally.  We’re not there yet, and I don’t know if we’re ever going to see something like that.  Anyway, I have digressed.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge can heat up really fast and consume the battery quite fast while you’re using the Gear VR headset.  As the phone is heating up, the performance of whatever game or video you’re watching can be degraded.  Gear VR doesn’t require a power source, because it taps into the phone’s power.  On the Gear VR headset, it got a micro USB connection slot, and so I think you may be able to charge the phone with a small, flash drive size, battery bank.

Without connecting a headphone of any sort, I’m very please with the sound quality of the Gear VR headset.  The sounds come out of this thing can be heard clearly and loudly.  The sounds come out of this thing give you the feeling of hearing high quality audio sources.  I like it!

To sum things up, I like Samsung Gear VR, because it’s mobile and fun.  With that being said, this virtual reality headset isn’t blowing my mind out of its sanity, because I’m just merely amused by it.  As right now, Samsung Gear VR headset doesn’t have the resolution power and the long lasting energy capacity, and so you can’t really say this thing is that next gen, because 3D and virtual reality technology have been out for awhile already.  Still, with only $99 a pop, Samsung Gear VR does provide great value, because you will have a lot of fun with it.  I guess, in the end, the fun does make a big difference.

    • Perhaps, this technology will get popular in coming years, thus pricing for the technology will be much more affordable.
