Introducing Waze, A User Generated Navigation App For iPhone

Nowadays, new cars most likely come with navigation system, and if you don’t have one in your car, it’s most likely you have purchased a portable one in electronic store.  Even if you haven’t had a portable navigation system, you could always download a free one as app on your smartphone.  Of course, you might be out of luck if your smartphone doesn’t support such kind of apps or you don’t own a smartphone.  I say, it’s likely that you have one, and if you don’t have one now, I think you will have one sooner than later.

Anyhow, yesterday I found myself fumbling for direction.  Unfortunately, my car had an older navigation system and I had refused to update the CD which came with it so new locations could be updated.  The place I went to could not be found as my car navigation was unable to locate the address, and so I had to resort to an app on iPhone.  I used an auxiliary cable so the sounds from my iPhone and its apps could pass through my cars’ speakers.  At first, I had no idea which navigation app I would use on iPhone.  There were too many of them, but I made a wise choice and found Waze.

Waze is an easy navigation app for iPhone.  It is relying on user generated alerts to notify you of traffic jam, police, accident, hazard and more.  I’m not one hundred percent sure how it is working exactly, because I’m so brand new to it.  Nonetheless, I found out yesterday that I was able to use it to travel to my destination safe and sound, because the instruction gave off by a voice from Waze was clear and precise.  I didn’t even have to learn how to use the darn app, because it was so easy to just use it.

You have to allow Waze to read your current location so it could know where you at right away.  All you have to do next is to tap onto a vehicle icon on the bottom left of your iPhone screen to pull up the Menu window, tap on Navigate icon, and enter the address or the name of the place that you want to travel to.  A voice will speak through your iPhone, and you will be able to navigate using its instruction.

Inside Menu, you can click on Reports to read what are happening near you.  Perhaps there are traffic jam or car accident nearby, and so you should make a detour.  The cool thing is that you can also track where the police are.  All these reports are pouring in through people like you, because they are using Waze too.  Come to think of it though, I don’t think all reports will be accurate, because humans tend to make mistakes.  And so, I don’t think Waze will always be one hundred percent accurate on everything.  Nonetheless, you can’t just disregard the bulk of things that matter about Waze for there is little chance of inaccuracy.

Waze makes it easy for you to report something odd that is happening on your road or street or highway.  By clicking on the exclamation mark icon on the bottom right of your iPhone screen, you can then tap on an icon that is relating to your situation.  For an example, if you see police hide nearby you, click on the Police icon to report that you have seen police in your area.  You can label the police as Visible or Hidden, and you can even take a picture of the police to send it onto Waze, I think.

What Waze needs is Siri.  Without Siri or voice control, it’s rather dangerous to use Waze.  Obviously, this can apply to all navigation apps on smartphone.  This is why people keep encourage smartphone users not to texting while driving, and so by using navigation app and meddling with Waze at the same time can be as dangerous as texting.  I advise people not to meddling with Waze while driving.

In conclusion, I think Waze is a good app.  The best feature of Waze is that it’s free to download and use.  What cool about Waze is that it allows users to report traffic incidents and so on, but I think what make Waze cool can also make it a dangerous app to use while driving.  Can we say Driving Under Waze or DUW?  Of course, Waze won’t be the only app that is facing this sort of criticism, because any other navigation app without voice control will have to be categorized as dangerous to use while driving.  Waze also branches into popular social elements such as allowing users to share traffic incidents on Twitter and Facebook.  I like Waze, but I do think it needs voice control.  Its main function works out great, and I’m talking about its accuracy in regarding to navigation.

Samsung Flexible AMOLED Touts 3D, Bendable Tablet Size Touchscreen Device; As If It’s A Thin See Through Plastic Paper

I come to love Apple for one reason, their products make me feel good.  Yes, just like that.  If you want more, I’ll tell you more.  Apple products emphasize simplicity within exquisite designs.  So, when you hold a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air in your hand, the logo shines on the back, the curvature of the machine, and the feel of its metal, all of it speaks to me beautifully.  On the software side, it’s solid until Mac OS X Lion gives my MacBook Pro few hiccups, but Apple went extra mile in helping me out by fixing my machine at zero cost to me even though my one year manufacturer warranty had expired.  OK, it wasn’t as if Apple was being super nice, but it is more of how the logic board of mid 2010 MacBook Pro has had real issues with Mac OS X Lion.  After the fix, I once again vouch for Apple products.  Great customer service speaks volumes, I guess.

I guess we have great Apple products thanks to Steve Jobs great insights.  He knew how to push his company to develop things that speak to customers beautifully.  Since his passing, I fear Apple may not be able pushing for things that speak to customers beautifully.  Great innovation and great insight are the two things that I think a tech company must always thrive for.  Oh, let not forget about great customer service too, and this would apply for all businesses.  Anyhow, lately, I keep hearing how Apple blocks Samsung from selling Samsung tablets in several countries, and I start to think that Apple might have spending too much time on patent wars and not enough time on coming up with great innovations and bringing about great insights.  But what do I know since it’s clearly that I’m not working for Apple and I’m not the innovator, the engineer, or having any caliber of that sorts.

Speaking of Samsung, this company is being sued by Apple on the matter of iPad infringement on one hand, and on the other hand Samsung goes ahead by working on their futuristic bendable devices, hoping to have it be released sooner than later.  I should say Samsung is working on a bendable tablet.  The video right after the break shows how awesome bendable tablet could be.

Have you seen the video above?  I think it’s amazing!  If Samsung is able to make this product a reality sooner than later, I think Samsung will have something that Apple wishes it would be the one who has had it first.  The feeling of carrying something as light as a piece of paper (I hope it would be as light as a piece of paper, but what do I know), 3D display or holographic capability, invisible speakers as how a commenter commented under the YouTube video above, and powerful as a small netbook or a sizable laptop — is simply breathtaking.  Now, let add the bendable attribute into the whole shebang, and you got the winner.  Another interesting point brought up by another commenter who had commented under the YouTube video above – How about the battery, how are they going to tuck that away?

Sure, Samsung Flexible AMOLED or should I say bendable tablet might face the same obstacles as iPad 2 of today, but it does have more of the same goodness and than more of goodness than what iPad 2 or all other tablets of today have already been carried.  One obstacle comes to mind right away is that typing on whatever surface without a real keyboard feeling is just plain suck.  Perhaps iPad 2 will soon have a winner in regarding to real feeling keyboard through a Kickstarter project Touchfire, but I have to wonder will there be something similar or better for Samsung Flexible AMOLED (assuming Samsung Flexible AMOLED will come true).  I have seen some bendable concept devices through various online videos that tout bendable attribute as a great feature for manipulating features on such devices, but I sure hope Samsung isn’t going down such route with their touchable Samsung Flexible AMOLED.  To me, I think I like the idea of how bendable devices could be less prone to breakage, therefore providing somewhat greater invincibility to devices’ durableness.  Let backtrack just a tad, bending to manipulate features on device seems to me a lot more work than touching.

In summary, I like Apple now, but can I say the same few years later if Apple lets other zooms by?  Samsung seems to head in the right direction as I like how they try to develop a bendable tablet size device with multitouch capability.  I could be wrong about the multitouch capability, because I did not see pinch to zoom and similar features in the YouTube video above.  I just assume that the video has someone touches the screen with one finger is somehow inferring that multitouch is also possible on such a device.  I guess time will tell.  For now, let us dream about how soon Samsung Flexible AMOLED would come true.

Price War Is Underway For Contents? Amazon Lowers The Price Of More Than 30 Verizon Phones To A Penny Each

iPhone 4S has jolted the smartphone market with its thundering entrance.  This prompts Apple’s adversaries to vamp up their efforts in taking down iPhone’s domination.  Amazon has made the first move by selling more than 30 Verizon phones for a penny each?

Obviously, the deal is that customers have to sign a contract for a penny a phone deal.  Nonetheless, this kind of deal is rather sweet, because a penny is something everyone hates to keep around.  People rather bundle up their pennies into sticks of pennies so they can haul such pennies to banks to cash out green papers, but some people feel repulsive at the idea for they think it’s somewhat embarrassing.  OK, did I digress?

Anyhow, I think Amazon has an interest in seeing Apple’s trademark products such as iPhone wane in popularity.  As long Apple keeps on gaining ground in the smartphone and tablet markets, the more Amazon will be scared for Amazon has to face with the possibility that more customers will shop for ebooks and music and movies and magazines on Apple’s platforms only.  Amazon is once again up to its old trick by selling things much much cheaper than its competitors could ever have done so, under any circumstance.  I think Amazon hopes this will eventually weed out all competitors in price wars.  This time around, Amazon means business in the context of a price war on contents.

In summary, at the agonies of Apple’s adversaries, for the limited time Amazon will sell over 30 Verizon’s phones for a penny each.  This move might prevent people to become Apple’s iPhone 4S customers, because they will be bind to the contracts under Verizon’s phones.  I doubt Apple will cut price, because Apple loves to think it’s above the fray — price war won’t be happening here folks! Nonetheless, Amazon might eventually give Apple a scare anyway unless Apple’s charm is too hard to beat!  Even cutting prices to a penny cannot win the day?

For your information:  According to PCMag, iPhone and iPad aren’t part of the deal, but Verizon’s top of the line phones will be part of the deal after all!  PCMag points out that even Motorola Droid Bionic is under the deal.  This phone has super fast Internet access and dual core processor.  Its original price was $299 with two year contract, but now it’s a penny with a contract.  So on and so on…
