Of course, I must remind you not to download fake Fixit or any Fixit program which isn’t belonging to Microsoft unless you know the purpose of such program. Why? Some programs might mask themselves as a legitimate program to help solve your problems, but in fact those programs might be malware and infect your computer with malicious directives.

Anyhow, my problem was I had removed a program manually, but for some strange reasons I could not remove this program from Add or Remove Programs list (i.e., from Control Panel >> Programs >> Uninstall a program). I went into Registry and removed all the entries that belonged to this specific program, and it refused to remove itself from Add or Remove Programs list. I downloaded CCleaner and used it to fix Windows Registry, but the program would relentlessly refuse to remove itself from Add or Remove Programs list. Well, as you already know what I had told you earlier, Fixit did it! Yep, with Fixit, I was able to remove this specific program from my Add or Remove Programs list. The link to Fixit is:

Sometimes, odd things might happen on Windows 7. One of those odd things I had encountered recently was the Start button refused to open up and stopped working for some strange reasons. I could always reboot the machine and had the problem fixed, but I was in the midst of doing something important. Fixing this problem without needing to reboot my machine was easy enough. I had to:

Open up task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

Highlight explorer.exe

End process of Explorer.exe (i.e., kill the Explorer.exe process)

On the top menu, click on File >> New Task (Run…)

Type in Explorer.exe for new task and click OK.

After doing the steps above, I was able to use the Start button again! The steps above could also work for some other problems too, because often killing an old process of a task or a program and renew such a process would actually help to get rid of the problem!

Are you looking for a great screen recorder for your Windows 7 system? Well, I’ve found a great one for you. BSR Screen Recorder is actually a very decent free screen recording software. When comparing BSR Screen Recorder software against CamStudio, I actually like BSR Screen Recorder better! For some strange reasons, CamStudio isn’t working correctly on my Windows 7 system, so you can see why I like BSR Screen Recorder better.

Apparently, BSR Screen Recorder has a commercial version also. Nonetheless, the difference between the free version and the commercial version of BSR Screen Recorder is that the free version will post unobtrusive watermark logo on the bottom corners of your video. The watermark logo is unobtrusive enough that I think the free version of BSR Screen Recorder is actually just as great as the commercial version of BSR Screen Recorder. Here is why, the free version of BSR Screen Recorder has all the features that the commercial version of BSR Screen Recorder has.

I’ve found out BSR Screen Recorder is very intuitive to use that I don’t even have to use the wizard. Nonetheless, BSR Screen Recorder does come with a wizard to guide you through the processes of recording a video, edit/produce video in movie lab, play a video file, work with movie studio tasks, and use a converter to convert videos into different video formats. You can always close the wizard and just manually edit the settings for the video, audio, file, hotkeys, options, and screen by going to Options at the top menu.

When you first install BSR Screen Recorder, it will use Windows 7′s default video codec. The Windows 7′s default video codec would be bad for recording videos, because the video quality would be bad. I suggest you to go to xvid.org and download Xvid codec for Windows 7 (x86 and x64). You need to install Xvid codec and then go back into BSR Screen Recorder’s Video setting under Options to change the video codec to Xvid MPEG-4 Codec. Remember to save the codec so whenever you record a video in the future, it will automatically use the Xvid MPEG-4 Codec. By the way, BSR Screen Recorder will encode and record the video for you at the same time. This means you don’t have to re-encode the video afterward unless you want to rencode the video to another video format. I’ve found Windows Media Player plays Xvid MPEG-4 Codec just fine.

You can download BSR Screen Recorder by going to Cnet, click on the Download link on Cnet website, and then type in BSR inside the Find Software search box to find BSR Screen Recorder software. Click on the download button next to the BSR Screen Recorder link on Cnet’s specific download page to download BSR Screen Recorder software. Don’t you worry about malware and virus, because I’d scanned BSR Screen Recorder with Norton 2012 Antivirus and found zero malware and zero virus. Also, Cnet Download is a reputable software download online destination, therefore there is little chance for you to download something on Cnet Download that might be harmful to your computer system.

OK, let me recap the good things about BSR Screen Recorder, then I’ll go into the bad things of BSR Screen Recorder. The good things are it’s easy to use, recording high quality videos if using the right video codecs, fast, allowing the encoding and recording of a video to carry out at the same time, and free to download and use the full version with one catch (i.e., unobtrusive watermark logo appears on the bottom corners of the videos).

The first bad thing about BSR Screen Recorder is that you cannot use it to record computer video games. This means you cannot use BSR Screen Recorder to record a video session of a computer game’s gameplay. The second bad thing about BSR Screen Recorder is that it does not work well with USB headphones. I’ve found out that I cannot record the loud enough sound level of the sounds that pass through the earpieces of a USB headphone. Nonetheless, BSR Screen Recorder does record crystal clear sounds from the microphone of a USB headphone. To clarify, this only happens if you want to record both the sounds from the earpieces and the microphone of a headphone. You can always record crystal clear sounds from the earpieces of a USB headphone if you do not allow Windows 7 to record the sounds from the microphone of a USB headphone.

In summary, BSR Screen Recorder is surprisingly easy to use and useful. It has all the trademark features that can be found in many great screen recording software. The best part is that you can use BSR Screen Recorder for free. BSR Screen Recorder is now my favorite screen recording software on Windows. For your information, I don’t know how well BSR Screen Recorder will work on other versions of Windows other than Windows 7. I know that BSR Screen Recorder is working rather well on Windows 7. BSR Screen Recorder is currently supporting Windows Vista, 7, 2008, 2003, XP, Me, NT, and 2000. The system requirements are Pentium CPU processor minimum, 512 MB memory minimum, and 20 MB free hard drive space for installing. Nonetheless, I think you need a lot more than the minimum requirements to really reap the benefits of many features that BSR Screen Recorder has to offer.

What an interesting day in regarding to my daily tech news digestion. Let start out with the strangest but yet so they claimed holy. PCMag reports Sweden Formally Recognizes File-Sharing as a Religion, and I wonder how the folks who are out to condemn the file sharers would feel about their worst nightmare has now had a religion to call home? What if this religion is really going to spread like how other major religions do, what then? Why is there a possibility for this religion to be spread wide and far? File sharing is a technology foremost! Just like any other technological tool, file sharing can be used for good or evil. With that being said, file sharing is extremely important for many people in our modern time. People are using file sharing technology to share education contents, and these educational contents can be in many forms. Furthermore, people are using file sharing to legally share free software, pictures, and many other types of contents. It’s clear this religion is speaking to the folks who think file sharing is truly holy. I think one has to truly look at file sharing through case by case basis and make a sound judgement which is relevant to our current common sense and values, or else it’s just truly another religious fanatic kind of thing. I couldn’t help but wonder will there be more specific areas of modern technology that will be recognized as religions of the future?

Next we have Engadget reports Tobii Gazes into the future, sees you navigating Windows 8 with your eyes (video), and so it seems that we might be able to use our eyes to navigate the Internet, local files and folders, and playing games on our computers that run Windows 8. The folks behind this technology boast that it will be much more efficient and intuitive to use Tobii Gazes than anything else. They claim by using Tobii Gazes, you can open up web links easier than using our fat fingers for touch (i.e., touching a web link with a finger to open it). They claim the mouse (mouse pointer) is efficient to open up web links, but it will be clumsy for other things on Windows 8 since Windows 8 is designed for touch. They think Tobii Gazes is better than a mouse at navigating Windows 8. I’ve noticed a commenter on Engadget mentioned that it might be faster for navigating Windows 8 by using Tobii Gazes, because the eyes could see things faster than how the mouse would move. Tobii Gazes allows the eyes to interact with the computer easily, therefore the commenter might has a point. Nonetheless, we have to wait and see, because old habit might be hard to quit! Check out the Tobii Gazes introduction video right after the break.

Next we have Windows 8 promises to allow users to be able to refresh their computer. Cnet reports Windows 8 will refresh your PC without losing your data. I think this feature is awesome. What this feature does is to reinstall Windows 8 for your computer, but it also allows you to be able to keep original Windows 8 Metro apps and personal data right after. Unfortunately, this refresh feature cannot retain your original desktop applications. Cnet suggests refresh feature for Windows 8 might be the best first option to address a Windows 8 system that gets wacky. Windows 8 refresh process is automatic, because you might not have to intervene to have your Windows 8 system be refreshing. One has to wonder how long Windows 8 refresh process will take, because it might not make much sense if the refresh process is going to take longer than just reinstalling Windows 8 and restoring the backup data. I guess we have to wait and see. Windows 8 is said to be released in the first quarter of this year, but I don’t know the exact date!

Let us get on with the next technological wonder of the day. Cnet reports Broadcom 802.11ac Wi-Fi chips hit CES 2012. Broadcom 802.11ac Wi-Fi chips are faster than what we have now. In fact, Cnet suggests that Broadcom 802.11ac Wi-Fi chips will be six times faster than 802.11n type of chips. Furthermore, Cnet suggests the new chips are going to be more efficient in term of power usage. This is good news indeed, because faster Wi-Fi means we will have faster content streaming and faster data transfers.

Check out this cool hovering car racetrack video! According to Coolest-gadgets.com’s article Hovering car racetrack apparently not as real as we want it to be, the video which demonstrates a hovering car racetrack has an illusive quality — it might not be real! Coolest-gadgets suggests the video of the hovering car racetrack was doctored with computer graphic effects. I can’t even tell if the video is fake or real, because it’s so real. Well, I guess it’s up to you to determine if the video is real or not, but the hovering car racetrack is real or not is totally another matter (you never know someone might be able to create such a thing for real). So, check out the cool hovering car racetrack video right after the break and hope that it’s real.

Finally, the last interesting bit of the post is about one of the founding fathers of the Internet claims that the Internet isn’t a human right! Gizmodo reports Father of the Internet: The Internet Isn’t a Human Right. What do you think? I think Vint Cerf truly has a point. Unfortunately, I think his point is only making sense if you live in the future. The future where the Internet might be a thing of the past. Right now, I feel Internet is so important, important enough to call it a human right. Internet is so important that several countries feel compelling enough to either promote the Internet as free for all or firewall up the Internet in their own images. You never know some countries might ban the Internet entirely. Internet is so important that companies such as Google make billions of dollars each year on the Internet. I have a feeling that before modern babies could walk, they might already know what the Internet is (don’t take this sentence too literally). The Internet is the enabler of file sharing and the illegal downloading of copyright contents, therefore there are folks who certainly feel the Internet is threatening their livelihoods that they support the movement of wanting to pass the bill known as SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). Come to think of it, whether the Internet is with the light or the dark side, Internet seems to be in everyone’s hair. I guess Internet is that important to be considered as a human right, for now.

Administrators can turn off the picture password feature if they favor text password feature. To prevent hackers from illegally attaining easy remote login, Windows 8 automatically disables picture password for remote login. It makes sense, users should be able to have a way to log in to their accounts faster and less problematic but still be considered as secure as usual, and so Microsoft’s answer is picture password for local network only.

I’m hoping Microsoft would add one more layer of security such as simple pin number or face recognition or voice recognition just to make logging into one’s account would be even more secure. Of course, face and voice recognitions aren’t hard to hack, because hackers could always photo someone’s face and record someone’s voice to bypass face and voice password recognitions. This is why I think such additional password recognition measures are good only if these are coupling with each other in layers. This way hackers must attain more than one things to bypass the layers of authentication.

I think it’s a good thing if users don’t have to remember long text passwords, because they might write down long passwords and leave such passwords in obvious places that anyone could have access to their passwords, consequently defeating the whole purpose of strong passwords. I think Windows 8′s picture password feature might not be adequate in protecting users’ logins even though Windows 8 is coupling picture with touch gestures to create stronger picture password. This is why I emphasize that picture password and touch gesture combination as an authentication method for Windows 8′s new password feature might need one or more layers of authentication such as face recognition. As long the additional layers of authentication are accurate and fast to execute, I don’t see there will be a problem of allowing users to log into their accounts fast, safe, and easy.

SkyDrive app for iPhone is good but can be made better! I can’t make the same comment for Windows Phone since I don’t have a Windows Phone. Why it is good but not really good? Unless I’ve no idea what I’m doing, it turns out that I can only upload individual photo or video but not entire folder of photos or videos at once onto SkyDrive with SkyDrive iPhone app. Imagine people who have thousands of photos and more than a dozen of videos on their iPhone would have to take ages to upload all their contents onto SkyDrive using SkyDrive iPhone app.

The uploading of a photo from iPhone to SkyDrive using SkyDrive iPhone app is simple and easy. Just tap on the sharing icon on the upper right corner of the iPhone screen, you can then tap on the Add a Photo or Video button to add a photo or video. Right underneath the Add a Photo or Video button, you’ll see Create a Folder button which allows you to create a new folder for storing more contents. Sharing a photo is easy too. By tapping on a photo to view, tap the photo again when it is in full screen mode to reveal the sharing button on the upper right corner of the iPhone screen, and tap on the sharing button to review the Send a Link button. Tapping on Send a Link button, you can send a link to someone’s email to allow a person to view or view and edit your photo. Above the Send a Link button, there is a Download button which allows you to download a photo easily in case you have deleted such a photo from iPhone and wanted to recover it from SkyDrive. Deleting a photo or a video, users have to view a photo or video in thumbnail mode, and then slide the finger from left to right on the thumbnail photo of a photo or video to reveal a Delete button. Tap on Delete button to remove the photo or video from SkyDrive. You can also delete the whole folder by viewing the folder in thumbnail mode and slide a finger the same way you do with a photo or video.

In summary, SkyDrive iPhone app is very limited in features. The uploading and sharing of photos and videos are easy as pie, and so SkyDrive iPhone app deserves a praise here. One other cool thing about SkyDrive iPhone app is that it allows you to take a photo or film a video immediately from your iPhone and upload to SkyDrive directly. Altogether, SkyDrive iPhone app needs more features, but it’s still awesome since it allows users to interact with a free 25 GB of storage space on the go.

Side Note: I’m baffled of not knowing how to upload a document using SkyDrive iPhone app. Sure, iPhone isn’t a great tool in creating and editing documents, but I think this app should allow users to upload documents nonetheless. Just a thought!

Some people prefer FTP, but other people want to use webDAV instead. Both FTP and webDAV work well in regarding to allowing users to transfer files from one computer to another. With webDAV, you can actually map a network drive and allow multiple users to use the same webDAV network drive. I’d written on how to set up webDAV in Ubuntu (a Linux distribution) before, and so this time around I’ll show you how to set up webDAV on Windows.

Let us begin (wait, make sure you check the images above to correlate with certain parts of the tutorial below):

Click on the Start button. Inside the search box, type in Windows Features. You should see an item says “Turn Windows features on or off,” click on it. It will take couple seconds to open up Windows Features window.

Inside Windows Features window, expand the Internet Information Services, expand the World Wide Web Services, expand the Common HTTP Features, and then check the boxes that say Static Content and WebDAV Publishing.

Expand the Security box underneath World Wide Web Services. Check the boxes that say Basic Authentication and Request Filtering.

Expand the Performance Features box underneath World Wide Web Services. Check the boxes that say Dynamic Content Compression and Static Content Compression.

Now, expand the Web Management Tools and check the box that says IIS Management Console.

Click OK to save the settings of Windows Features.

If many computers of yours are connecting to the same router and belong to the same home network or network, then premium security software which has its own firewall should not require you to actually open up the port 80 on the Windows 7 Home Premium machine which hosts webDAV server. Such security software I speak of are Norton, McAfee and so on. If you aren’t turning a firewall on for the computer which has enabled webDAV, then you don’t really have to open up port 80 for this specific computer. In case you are using the firewall which Windows 7 Home Premium provides, then you need to open up port 80 manually. If you intend to access the Windows 7 Home Premium machine which hosts webDAV from different networks, then you should configure your router to allow port forwarding of port 80 for the specific IP address of a computer or network which hosts webDAV server.

Let get back to Windows 7 Home Premium machine which you had enabled the Windows Features’ features earlier. Click on Start button again.

Inside search box of Start button, type in IIS Manager and you should see Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager item. Click on this.

A window of IIS Manager would pop up, and you should see your username. Expand your username so more items/boxes would appear. Expand Sites. Click on Default Web Site.

Now, you should see a center panel switch to something which has the item called as Authentication, representing by a half human figure with a lock icon. Double click on Authentication.

Make sure the status of Anonymous Authentication and Basic Authentication is enabled.

Click on Default Web Site in the left panel again. Double click on WebDAV Authoring Rules. A WebDAV Authoring Rules window should now appear.

On the right panel, click on Add Authoring Rule. The easiest way to set this up is to Allow access to All Content and Allow access to this content to All users. For permissions, make sure you check the boxes that say Read, Source, and Write. Click OK to save the settings.

Back out to WebDAV Authoring Rules window again. Click Enable WebDAV on the right panel.

Let us map a network drive to our webDAV folder:

Click Start button, click on Computer. Double click on Local Disk (C:). Double click on inetpub. Double click on wwwroot. Right click, select New, and select Folder. Type in a new name for the folder. In my case, I labeled it as webDAV. If Windows asks for administration permission to add webDAV to the wwwroot folder, you should say yes to it.

Double click on webDAV. On the top you should see Share with. Click on Share with and choose Homegroup (Read/Write). Alternatively, you can also choose Specific people and then go ahead to allow specific user to have access to webDAV folder.

Click on Start button again. Click on Computer. You should see at the top says Map network drive. Click on it and map a network drive letter to webDAV folder that you had created and shared with Homegroup or specific people earlier.

Now you should see a network drive which maps to your webDAV folder when you go to Start >> Computer.

Let us now access webDAV folder on Windows 7 Home Premium machine from our Mac:

Open up Finder.

Click on Go.

Click on Connect to Server.

Type in this: http://192.168.1.134/webDAV/. Make sure you replace the 192.168.1.134 with the correct IP address of your Windows 7 Home Premium machine (i.e., the IP address of the webDAV server). Make sure the spelling of the folder webDAV is indeed correct or replace it with the right webDAV’s folder name.

Click Connect. You should be prompted with an authentication window. You need to enter the username and the password of the user you have allowed to have access to webDAV.

Now you can move files and folders between your Mac and Windows 7 Home Premium machine using webDAV connection.

Some how, it’s difficult for Windows 7 Home Premium to connect to webDAV server of any environment (i.e., hosting by Windows or Linux machine). The best way to go around this is to use BitKinex which can be downloaded on download.cnet.com.

The whole idea of hosting a webDAV server on Windows 7 Home Premium is basically to allow Mac and Linux machines to have access to Windows 7 Home Premium share folders. In a way, Mac and Linux machines can see webDAV’s share folders as if their own folders, consequently allowing drag and drop files and folders between different machine architectures. There should be an easier way than webDAV or FTP for Windows to Windows file sharing and transferring, therefore you need not to host webDAV on Windows 7 Home Premium machine if you just want to use another Windows 7 Home Premium or higher versions of Windows for file sharing and transferring. I think webDAV feature is made available for all Windows 7 versions, except Windows 7 Starter edition. As long you aren’t using Windows 7 Starter edition, you can follow this tutorial to have webDAV server up. Good luck!

After the new Xbox Dashboard update for Xbox yesterday, I’m now able to control Xbox with voice in a more extensive way. Still, I think when I’m talking to Xbox, it does feel as if I’m talking to a stupid robot! Sometimes, I have to repeat my commands. At other times, I have to figure out what to say first before Xbox could wake up and understand me. Often times, I have to make sure there is a black panel on the bottom of the screen of the dashboard, because without it, there won’t be a small microphone icon and I won’t be able to talk to Xbox. I also notice there are windows within Xbox Live, I often stumble upon, require me to use my controller still.

I think Microsoft has released a better Xbox Dashboard, but I’m not impressed. Sure, the new Xbox Dashboard is way better than the old one, but voice controller is somewhat iffy still that I prefer the use of the controller. If I’m not wrong, Microsoft should be hard at work in improving the intelligence behind the technology which allows Kinect and Xbox to be able to process the words that come out from the mouth of any human. If Microsoft isn’t, then I think Xbox will eventually lose luster and play catch up to something else that does it better in respect to voice intelligence.

I think voice intelligence that is able to understand the words that come out of the mouth of any human in natural way will be very popular and useful in many ways in the future. One example would be telling a device to search for something on the Internet. OK, sure, Xbox is now allowing users/gamers use voice commands and demand Bing to search for something, but I’ve found out that it’s rather hard to do so. Either I’m clueless how Xbox Bing should work, because for the life of me I could not ask Xbox Bing to search for what I want. Correct me if I’m wrong, perhaps Xbox Bing is only searching for games, music, videos, movies, and whatever else that is available on Xbox Live and console. If this is the case, then Xbox Bing isn’t yet capable in searching the entire Internet as how Bing normally does through a web browser.

Shutting down Xbox through voice is fun if you know how to; the correct way is by saying “Xbox Go Home, Settings, Turn Off , Yes.” This is why Microsoft definitely needs to make Xbox understands longer phrases in natural way and not through specific commands. Nonetheless, it’s easier now for Xbox users/gamers to control Xbox through voice than before.

In summary, it’s now possible for Xbox users/gamers to play movies, music, games, and do other things with voice commands. Before, Xbox users/gamers could only command Xbox through voice in a more limited way. Still, Xbox voice intelligence leaves much to be improved, because it’s not natural for users/gamers to remember specific commands and reading what could be read inside Xbox Dashboard and other sections inside Xbox Live. It’s much better if users/gamers can just speak naturally to Xbox. Xbox isn’t Siri, but don’t we wish Xbox is capable as Siri? How about even better, I think Xbox should be able to talk back to Xbox users/gamers in a natural way.
