First Look At Jolicloud

Jolicloud is an operating system that is mainly built for netbooks, because the requirement for hardware is lighter.  This put Jolicloud in a direct competition with the upcoming Google’s Chrome OS.  Just like Chrome OS, Jolicloud allows users to use the web as their main theaters.  Apps and everything else are cloud focus!  What is that mean?  If I’m correct, applications and data are saving onto the clouds, and the clouds are a Jolicloud’s specific networks/databases over the Internet.  This process requires you to have an Internet connection!

Jolicloud is a new thing, a new operating system (sort of), and it’s based on Ubuntu, and so I take it for a spin!  To install Jolicloud, you can either download it as in ISO format/extension, or in .exe format/extension.  I choose .exe extension for installing Jolicloud to make my life a little easier since all you have to do is to download, double click on the .exe file, and install Jolicloud.  With the .iso format, you have to burn into a CD/DVD, and using the CD/DVD to install Jolicloud just like you install any other operating system.

Honestly, I’m using VirtualBox (virtualization) to test Jolicloud out!  VirtualBox allows you to not have to burn a CD/DVD for your .ISO file, because in Virtualbox you can switch your .ISO file to be as if it is a CD — installing Jolicloud this way is as simple as download Jolicloud’s installation file onto Windows.  For curiosity, I take a longer route to install Jolicloud by create a Windows Vista machine within VirtualBox first, download Jolicloud within Windows Vista machine second, and install Jolicloud by executing Jolicloud’s .exe installation file on Windows Vista machine (VirtualBox host is Windows 7).

So how the installation process will look like?  Check out the series of images below to get a general overall picture of installing Jolicloud!

1) Double click on Jolicloud’s .exe installation file, the extraction process of the installation file begins.

2)  Welcome screen appears when the extraction process is done.

3)  Click on “Get started” and choose a login name and a password.

4)  A confirmation screen of the installation size and drive appears at this point.

5)  Prepare to install process begins, and a screen of such will appear to affirm you that.

6)  Done setting up the installation process, you need to click restart on the last screen before a reboot!

7)  Right after a first reboot!  You see a screen that allows you to launch either into your original operating system or into Jolicloud!

8)  The installation process begins right after the first boot!

9) After the installation of Jolicloud is done, you get couple welcoming screens or so, and then you see a login screen.  Enter the username and password that you were asked to enter earlier to access your Jolicloud system.

10)  You get to see a screen of choices that allow you to connect to the cloud, and I choose connect to Facebook method!

11)  To move forward, hit on the “Cool” button, and a screen appears to ask you to specifically specify your netbook model!

Let us explore Jolicloud:

I think the idea of using Jolicloud as an operating system for netbooks is a great idea, but there are few things that I dislike about Jolicloud.  One of those few things is that Jolicloud is a cloud base system, and my data may not be as secure as I would’ve like.  I cannot install additional software that I may purchase at store or from online store onto Jolicloud.  So on…

There are good things for using Jolicloud too!  Let assume Jolicloud’s networks and databases and servers on the cloud are very secured, by using Jolicloud you don’t have to worry about installing a firewall, an antivirus software, a malware software, and so on.  Jolicloud is less demanding on your computer’s resources, and so using Jolicloud can be fast, but it’s also depending on how fast is your Internet connection!  So on…

What you think about Jolicloud?  Have you try it out yet?  Did you know Jolicloud allows you to keep your original operating system and optionally boot into Jolicloud?  Are there things about Jolicloud that you dislike?  Write a comment or two to share with everyone about your experience with Jolicloud!  Have fun!
